What Really Happened

Here in the RFFC, some of us have a suspicion that Tenchi isn't quite as dim as he seems to be. Now we have proof that the record of events has been distorted. Thanks to the valiant efforts of our undercover agent Mihoshi (who has done such a marvellous job of concealing her true identity under a front of ditziness), we have obtained a copy of the videotape that Nobuyuki made at the start of episode 2, Here Comes Ayeka. Nobuyuki has asked us not to publish the tape itself, so here we present a brief illusrated transcript.

Tenchi's Instincts Disagree

"You made this mess all by yourself, and if you think I want another demon running around..."

"Well, that's okay... ha ha ha"

Ba-ba-BOOM!

This 4 Frame Comic was scanned from the first volume of the Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki OAV filmcomic, ISBN 4-87376-118-2, and is copyright AIC and Pioneer LDC, Inc.

For those who don't know, a filmcomic is a full colour manga-like volume made by photographing the original animation cels and adding text. The plot is the same as the show from which it was made, although there can be differences in dialog (Manatsu no Eve contains many examples of this). Apparently all the OAVs, the TV series, both movies, and all the Pretty Samy OAVs and TV series have been released in this format, but I don't have all of them... yet.

Most of the Tenchi Muyo filmcomic volumes include a bonus section of half a dozen or so "4 Frame Comics" similar to the above. These comics take the mickey out of the series. In them, we learn some interesting things: that Nobuyuki is an expert at preparing boiled cabbit; that Aeka wears a wig; that the spaceship Tsunami bears a striking resemblance to a frying pan; and much more.

The filmcomics cost around $15-$20 per volume, and are only available in Japanese.
