Ryoko's Family Tree (OAV Version)

Ryoko's biological family structure in the OAV series is a lot more complex than it at first seems. Here is the most up-to-date version I have been able to put together, using information from both OAV series and the Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki manga.

Warning: This page contains spoilers for both the OAV series and the manga.

I'll be adding illustrations of the characters to this page as and when time permits.

Who They Are

?: The mysterious entities, if any, from which the three sister goddesses sprung. No information available.

Tokimi-sama: First of the three goddesses. First encountered in one of Sasami's precognitive dreams in OAV episode 7, The Night Before The Carnival. Plays a significant role in OAV episodes 11 through 13, and is expected to be a major player if any more OAV episodes are ever produced. Tokimi is believed to spend most of her existence outside our space-time continuum.

Tsunami-sama: Third of the three goddesses. First encountered in OAV episode 6, We Need Tenchi. The foundation of the Jurai Empire and the power behind the Ships of Jurai.

Washu-sama: Second of the three goddesses. Washu-sama has not been seen in any of the OAVs themselves, but there are several images of her available, including one in the laserdisc set of OAV episodes 12 and 13.

3 Gems: 20,000 years ago, Washu-sama renounced her godhood, sealing it and all its power into these three gems. Later on she would give the gems to Ryoko, to become the main source of her power. The gems are an important plot point in the first OAV series, and also play a role in OAV episodes 11 and 12.

Washu-san: After renouncing her godhood, Washu became relatively human and joined the Space Science Institute, eventually becoming its director. The only glimpse we have of her is at the end of OAV episode 8, Hello Baby.

Unknown Husband: While at the Institute, Washu had an unsuccessful marriage. The identity of her husband is unknown; all we know is that he had blond hair and came from a powerful family. OAV episode 8, Hello Baby.

Unknown Child: The child of Washu's failed marriage. OAV episode 8, Hello Baby.

Washu-chan: After the failure of her marriage and loss of her baby, Washu reverted to childhood, becoming the familiar 12-year-old from the OAV series, first encountered in OAV episode 6, We Need Tenchi.

Masu: Anti-matter-based life form used as the genetic base for both Ryoko and Ryo-Ohki. They are capable of generating tremendous power. See OAV episode 10, I Love tenchi, for extensive details about the Masu and their part in the creation of Ryoko and Ryo-Ohki.

Mineral life form: An unknown life-form that Washu used as the other half of the base for Ryo-Ohki. She mentions it in OAV episode 10, I Love Tenchi, but gives no details.

Ryo-Ohki I: The original Ryo-Ohki, used in OAV episode 2, Here Comes Aeka, and seen in flashback in OAV episodes 3 Hello Ryo-Ohki and 8 Sasami Tsunami.

Chibi the cat: The ailing cat seen briefly at the start of OAV episode 1, Ryoko Resurrected, and on the school roof later in the same episode. The assimilation of Chibi with Ryo-Ohki may or may not be the reason Ryo-Ohki has a vaguely cat-like cry.

Ryo-Ohki II: After the destruction of Ryo-Ohki I at the end of OAV episode 2, Here Comes Aeka, the new, improved, Mark II Ryo-Ohki hatches from an egg in OAV episode 3, Hello Ryo-Ohki.

Ryo-Ohki-chan: After the bizarre events of OAV episode 10, I Love Tenchi, Ryo-Ohki assimilated more Masu, acquiring a humanoid form and presumably becoming at least 75% Masu.

Ryoko: Our Goddess as she appeared between OAV episodes 1 and 12 inclusive.

Yakage: Washu's other assistant, besides Kagato. (She really knew how to pick 'em, didn't she?) Yakage was obsessed with developing the perfect sword. He only appeared in the Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki manga, second tankoban (or Viz No Need for Tenchi! graphic novel volume 2), and was eventually killed by Tenchi.

Minagi: Created by Yakage, who stole some of Ryoko's genetic material and combined it with his own. She looks almost exactly like Ryoko but has a different personality. Minagi appears to be very proud of Ryoko. She appears only in the manga, starting with the second tankoban.

Zero: A robot doppelganger created by Washu's rival, the demented scientist Dr. Clay. When Clay was sent by Tokimi-sama to capture Washu, he sent in Zero to seize Ryoko and take her place. The kidnapping was successful. However, Ryoko's powerful emotions overcame Zero's programming, foiling Clay's plan; Clay then attempted to destroy Zero. This story begins in OAV 11, The Advent of the Goddess.

Zero Ryoko: Washu saved Zero's life by persuading Ryoko (at that time, held prisoner in a giant water pot) to assimilate her. Washu claimed at the time that Zero really was part of Ryoko from the start; otakus are still divided on whether or not she was lying. (My opinion is that she was lying, knowing that it was the only way Ryoko would be persuaded to do it. It's likely that had Ryoko refused, she would have regretted it ever after.) The resulting hybrid creature, formed at the end of OAV episode 12 Zero Ryoko, is gentler and more emotional than the original Ryoko, but not as over-emotional as Zero.
